I recently took the grate out of my fireplace and replaced it with a grate heater and now I'm heating my whole house with my fireplace. A fireplace is about 5% heat efficient and this they claim makes it a 120,000 BTU per hour furnace and I believe it you can’t make to big of a fire or you will run you’re self out. I bought the grate heater on ebay it was called insertafurnace it was the only one with a screen. I also found the website http://www.insertafurnace.com/

You should be fine as long as the temp in the converter is above 500 degrees, which it should be if the chimney is at that temp. This is where generalizations can get me in trouble, so in all cases, consult your owners manual. If you can't find yours, try searching the manufacturers web site. In many cases you can find download a copy of the instructions for free.

Where is the 1000 degrees measured? I only have a thermometer on my chimney.I turn on my combustor at 500 degrees, and leave it burn overnight.
The temperature must drop below 500 degrees. Is the combustor still working, or am I plugging it up with low temperatures? Thanks for your help.

There are many different types of manufactured fireplaces. Many that are seen are the old cheapies that seem to be preferred by many builders. Some of the mid-line fireplaces will get you into larger sizes and more options. You can even find a few that are able to heat the entire house.
As for gas, that is usually and option on most wood burning fireplace, though not required. I do recommend the installation of a gas log lighter pipe to make start-up much easier. Also, it makes it easy to convert to a gas log in the future in case you or a future home-owner might want to make a change to ease and conveniance.
Any wood buring appliance will require a chimney system that can go to your roof-line and beyond. Vent pipe can take up a fair amount of space, so be sure you have the right spot to vent the chimney.

"Some units make it possible for the heat to be ducted to adjacent rooms where an auxiliary fan can send it through the existing ducts to the rest of the house."

What units? From whom? Searching the net for these products, I find nothing. The products may be great, but the manufactures need a new marketing concept.
